CBD vs. THC

Before we get into the mix of things, we should know the difference between CBD and THC and how they are related.

Let’s take a look at what CBD and THC are first!

What is CBD?

CBD is the short term for what is also known as Cannabidiol; it is one of 85 active compounds that are found in cannabis plants. CBD is quite popular these days, and you probably heard of CBD everywhere, from the news to your friends. The history of cannabis use can be traced back to ancient times in Asia and Central Asia for its medicinal and beneficial use.  So there should be no surprise in the recent phenomenon of CBD.

CBD is a non-psychoactive compound and is one of the major cannabinoids that is found in cannabis plants. CBD is the most common and prosperous compound in hemp, representing up to 40% of the plant.

With CBD’s emergence on the market, you will hear the term full-spectrum CBD, which simply means hemp-derived CBD with full cannabinoid and terpene profile. It is practically the use of the entire plant.

It became legal in all 50 states in 2018 when the 2018 Farm Bill Act was approved. This bill legalized the sale and use of cannabis products in various states as long as the products do not contain more than 0.3% of THC by dry weight. CBD does not contain THC, so that means it does not get you “high.”

There are many forms of CBD that people can consume now. You can get CBD in edibles, oils, topicals, and CBD flower online.

What is THC?

Tetrahydrocannabinol, as we all know it as THC, is one of the main psychoactive compounds in cannabis or marijuana.  Delta-9 THC is the active compound, and cannabinoids can be found in large amounts inside marijuana, and it is found in minimal amounts in hemp. Many may not realize that THC is not a single compound but a family of compounds that consist of different THC analogs.

THC Analogs:

  • THCa (the acidic form of THC)
  • Delta-9 THC ( common THC)
  • Delta 8 THC ( lesser form of THC)

Delta-9 THC is known for the “high” feeling you get when you consume or smoke cannabis. When THC is ingested or smoked, it goes into the bloodstream and directly binds to cannabinoid receptors throughout the nervous system, which activates the “high” or intoxication. This happens with both Delta 9 THC and Delta 8 THC. This compound or a psychoactive ingredient in Cannabis is the THC that everyone has heard of.

The maximum amount of Delta-9 THC that can legally be in a product is 0.3% by dry weight, which means that for every 1 gram of product weight, up to 3mg of Delta-9 THC can be included without breaking any laws. For example, a 5-gram product can legally contain up to 15mg of Delta-9 THC. Delta-9 THC at the federal level is still not legal, but in many states, cannabis with THC has been approved for medical and recreational use. Delta 8 THC is considered legal because it is derived from hemp plants.

Differences

The difference between CBD and THC, according to studies done, is when it comes to the cannabinoid receptors is that it does not bind to them but stimulates them. The stimulations cause our body to produce its own cannabinoids, which are called anandamides, also known as our bliss chemical. Other receptors that CBD targets in the body include receptors that are involved in serotonin, TRPV1, GPR55, and PPAR.

Can You Take Delta-8 THC and CBD Together?

Yes, mixing both will not have any adverse effects; both of the compounds are considered legal because they are both hemp derivatives.

Can You Take Delta-9 THC and CBD Together?

Yes, hemp-derived CBD products can legally have up to 0.3% Delta 9 THC. By using certain CBD products, you may already be mixing the two, but only in tiny trace amounts.

Perks of Using CBD and THC Together

You want to know the perfect ratio to use when mixing, but first, we should discuss the benefits of doing so.

Let us take a look at the main advantages of combining them.

Entourage Effect

The entourage effect was coined in 1998 by whom considered one of the godfathers of cannabis research, Dr. Raphael Mechoulam. In the simplest way, the entourage effect is a theory that cannabis, in its entire spectrum, works best together. Cannabis, as intended by mother nature, is that all the components of cannabis, like all the phytocannabinoids, terpenes, chlorophyll, fatty acids, and flavanoids, are supposed to work together to produce a harmonious symphony. Every element of cannabis is like a note in a song; when put together creates beautiful music.

Another study on animals showed that the ratio of 1:1 CBD to THC was the most effective.

High Reduction

For some new users and experienced users, their fears of using THC have to do with the negative side effects of THC. The standout feature of CBD is that its neuroprotective properties do not get you high, but research has shown that it counteracts the adverse effects of THC.

Academics and scientist seem to agree that CBD users are less paranoid and have less memory impairment when compared to THC users.

Throughout the past years of cannabis breeding, the market is dominated by breeds of cannabis with extremely high THC and little or no CBD. Cannabis today is not what our parents and grandparents were smoking “back in the day.” THC allows CBD to engage with endocannabinoid receptors. You can say THC is like a key to the CB1 receptor, and it unlocks the receptor to allow CBD to bind as well.

The Perfect CBD: THC Ratio

Now that you understand CBD and THC, you can probably guess what the ratios will be. More CBD means you will be less of a THC feeling and vice versa. So once you know what you are looking for, you can figure out your perfect ratio.

CBD: THC – 1:1

The ratio of 1:1 is considered to be the “golden ratio” for CBD to THC ratios. Scientists say this equally distributed ratio is the best for experiencing the benefits of cannabis. You will still get a “high” feeling.

CBD: THC – 2:1

With this two-to-one ratio, the user will feel a “high” feeling but will not feel overwhelmed by the feeling. They say the 2:1 ratio will leave you feeling creative and uplifted without the adverse effects that may come with THC.

CBD: THC – 8:1

The 8:1 ratio would be excellent for daytime users that need to get things done and stay productive. This ratio will be a very light “high” and will not ruin your productivity or functionality.

CBD: THC – 20:1

This will be the best ratio for first-time or rookie cannabis users. If you want just to enjoy the entourage effect of two cannabinoids, this is the ratio for you. You will likely feel no “high” at all. With this ratio, sedation effects are possibly higher.

CBD: THC – 1:0 (CBD Only)

This ratio is for users who don’t want to feel a “high” and just want to use hemp products. You will get all the benefits of hemp with this ratio. It is practically 100% CBD hemp flower with trace amounts of THC.

CBD: THC – 1:2 or 1:3

This ratio leans more towards the THC side. Even though there is more THC, CBD can buffer some of the THC activity but may potentially elongate the experience as well.

How To Mix Hemp with Cannabis

Now that you know what your perfect ratio is for THC and CBD. You can control the ideal strengths that you want for the day. Whether or not you are sensitive to THC, it is always best to start low and slow.

You can approach your mixture in two ways, by potency and by effect.

The Simple Way – Pair by Potency

This method is the easiest way to make your ideal ratio of hemp and cannabis. Choose two strains that have similar potency. Use the “golden ratio” of 1:1 THC to CBD.  Half cannabis and half hemp. Easy-peasy!

To calculate these ratios, it would be easier if you had a scale, but you can also “eyeball” how much to use. You will need to weigh up two, eight, or 20 parts of CBD flower to every one part of THC flower. If you are not sure about doing the math, you can always ask a professional at ATLRx to help you.

The Better Way – Pair by Effect

Follow your nose! In other words, you can decide on your mix by terpenes that you find desirable and then choose hemp and cannabis strains that will compliment your ideal mixture. Learn more about Indica vs. Sative here.

Once you figure out the math, take notes of what you like and the ratio that you figure is the best for you!

Perks of CBD and CBG Hemp Flower

The Food and Drug Administration of the U.S. government has not claimed that CBD or CBG products can diagnose, treat, or prevent any disease.

Many people use CBD and CBG to self-treat various symptoms, and some health care advocates may recommend CBD hemp flower for specific diagnosed conditions. Nonetheless, CBG is still under research, and that hemp flower, CBD, and CBG should not be treated against the advice of a medical professional or doctor. The benefits of CBD and CBG are anecdotal and are based on users’ experiences.

Because of FDA directions and regulations, we can’t express any potential benefits of CBD on our website. We apologize for this. In any case, we are assuming that since you are visiting ATLRx, you know or are curious to know more about CBD. We urge you to Google “what are the benefits of CBD?”
