What is inflammation?  Inflammation is basically a response of our body –it is an essential part of the immune system’s response to injury and infection. It is the body’s way of signaling the immune system to heal and repair damaged tissue, as well as protect you from infections, bacteria, viruses, and other harmful pathogens that threaten your health.

Inflammation occurs as a natural protective response when the body is harmed. It is important to note that there are two types of inflammation: acute and chronic.  Acute Inflammation is a response to an injury or infection. For example, if you get a paper-cut or a sprained ankle you’ll notice redness, pain, warmth, and swelling in the area, but once all the cells from the inflammatory response have done their job and the injury is healed, then inflammation disappears. That’s the kind of inflammation you want to happen.

It’s the counterpart, acute chronic inflammation is a little more problematic. Acute inflammation often turns into chronic inflammation when the inflammatory response does not disappear. Over time, chronic inflammation may have a negative impact on your tissues and organs, and some research suggests that it could also play a role in arthritis and even cancer.

What causes Chronic Inflammation:

  • Your body is trying to fight off an infection but isn’t having any success.
  • Your immune system is mistakenly attacking healthy tissue (autoimmune disease).
  • Long-term exposure to irritants.
  • Experts also believe that a range of unhealthy lifestyle choices, like smoking, obesity, and excessive alcohol consumption can cause inflammation as well.

Common Symptoms of Chronic Inflammation:

  • Fatigue
  • Fever, rashes, and mouth sores
  • Joint, chest, and abdominal pain
  • Digestive issues
